From Learn Coding to Learn AI: Our Children’s Race to Learn

Yes, it was for everyone; everyone to learn coding four years ago.

Everyone was supposed to participate in the race to support their children’s learning to code.

Yes, it wasn’t just children; many adults left their jobs to enter coding, as it was a high-demand job during the decade of 2013 to 2023.

Later, reskilling was a common approach to help adults learn coding.

Children and adults were put in a race, and they didn’t know the game ended before they finished the race. What happened to those children? Anyone know?

But yes, these children who learnt coding back then can be considered as learning for the development of cognitive skills and particular skills.

Coding is still necessary, but many aspects of it are automated. And someone with advanced skills in coding is always wanted, but the number of such needs has sharply reduced over these years.

In Pandemic, the demand increased.

Now it is — “Learn AI”.

It was coding for toddlers.

They even made books on “learn coding”.

Now kids are learning “Neural Networks” and “AI”.

Things are changing.

Many made coaching centers to teach C++ and Java to children.

Then came a phase of learning Python across schools and colleges.

Now it’s AI in schools and colleges.

How fast this learning bubble changed — It was there for a decade.

So, can we say the next AI learning bubble would last a decade? Read my next article on this topic.

Around 2015, learning coding with C++ and Java was in every School and University.

In 2020, coding was a 21st-century skill, needed just like Maths and English.

Coding was taught online, after school, as a special subject in schools, even if the students were burdened.

Even in kindergarten, software was available for such young children.

Parents felt a sense of competition with other people’s children learning coding.

Did it put stress on young children?

Was it right to teach advanced coding to children?

What are those children who learned to say advanced Java in 2015 doing now?

Startups for teaching coding by alumni of top-tier universities.

The “learn coding” bubble lasted from 2013 to 2023.

During the pandemic, there was a high demand for online learning for children, with advertisements for it everywhere.

Local neighbourhood coaching classes for children were blooming.

In 2022–23, investors started to disinvest in coding coaching.

AI shifted the narrative from every child must code to every child must have AI-ready skills.

But AI needed maths back then, so math learning became important for a while, till GPT took over AI.

The idea that every kid must be a software developer is no longer the norm.

Now, coding is a part of STEM education, no longer a special area; rather, AI chapters are taught in younger classes now.

Some schools teach advanced coding as a special subject, which is not mandatory.

Now it’s AI.

It reminds me of the time when children were taught app-making in 2014, but they were unable to make the app ready for the App Store.

Everyone is talking about teaching AI to their children.

How long would this learning AI bubble last? See my coming articles.

A decade? Is it worth it for your children to learn AI?

Yes, since AI is different from coding.

But what should we teach kids about AI? At what age, what topic?

Well, I’ll cover that in the coming articles.

Thanks for reading.
