At the US Saudi Investment Forum last week, Elon Musk said work would be optional, such as playing sports or video games.
He mentioned work would be optional before as well.
But how can all work be optional when Musk wants to make Life multiplanetary?
It took civilization thousands of years to develop Earth to this level.
It took settlements and industrialization to change the face of civilizations for at least a millennium.
We traveled around the Earth, we found solutions, we evolved.
How can we make Mars develop if we keep work as optional?
What is the definition of optional work? He says, just like playing video games or growing vegetables.
I don’t want to go against what he said, but let’s call it, we can make “work professional”.
We can make the work professional.
Come work, change work, or move to a new location?
Are we nomads? No!
What is in the future then?
A lot of work?
Maybe we may get reduced work times?
Maybe we may get reduced days of the week to work!
But not in this year for sure, a lot of work is there on Earth!
What work?
Work like feeding billions of people on Earth, from growing to distributing to production and supplies. This business is not going anywhere, and work here has to be professional. And this professionalism has to increase with time. We need to improve on fertilizers and insecticides. This can’t be all automated in one year time.
Feeding not just wheat flour, rice, and staples, but also new foods, cooked and raw, cheaper grapes, and cheap cherries, so that we all can eat strawberries, and we can have some nice mangoes in winter, which are not costly. All this is work.
We need professionalism in our work.
We need to work on daily farming.
We need to work from the clean cattle industry where new viruses do not sprout.
We need work from firefighters, professional, not optional work.
We need work from the disaster management people.
We need work from the medical industry, whether from pharma or medical professionals.
We need to work on sanitation; we need to work on dirty rivers contaminated with sewage. Who will work here? ROBOTS, yes, but what do you need to tell robots? That can’t be optional.
And the day they say I am an optional dairy farmer, where will we get our bread and butter from? Yes, AI is coming here as well, but it will take time.
Yes, what about the food price?
Well, we need to discuss that. Hold on.
So, when Musk says work would be optional, is that after 10 years or after 20 years? And how does he want to make life multi-planetary? How many buildings would Mars have? How many people would work remotely from Earth to Mars? Would it be a huge number? But still, I don’t know where the oxygen and water on Mars will come from. Who will find that? So, we need scientists on Earth, meaning research and scientists are needed on Earth now more than ever! So, science graduates, please don’t shift to AI.
That means work would be optional, but it’s not now. That time is not now; maybe Elon can explain what he meant by future in detail.
We are having robots in all dimensions, but we still need humans in the above fields.
To be continued.
