AI is more than Deep Learning- On Initiatives of AI in Governance

Note: The original is on the author’s webpage. The article is posted because some people believe that AI in governance signifies a mess. However, AI is not Deep Learning all the time, AI is more than Deep Learning.

Recent discussions online about the use of AI in governance have led to negative emotions. Yes, they are negative emotions, not mixed emotions. Yes, deep learning has taken over all research, so it’s okay if you think AI means deep learning.

Here are some key points everyone should understand before taking a stand.

— AI is not Deep Learning alone

— We already use AI in our daily lives, so why not incorporate it into governance?

— We use AI in washing machines, with Alexa, for finding contacts by voice on our phones, for asking other questions using voice, for retrieving information on the internet, and more.

— None of these require deep learning. Still, all these examples involve AI (Artificial Intelligence).

— Using the help of reverse gear in the mirror, which is also AI, summarizing large research papers briefly, that is also AI, and so on…None use Deep Learning.

—Many AI-based heart surgeries and related medical practices don’t utilize deep learning. Be part of the change, accept it for your benefit.

— When you travel with the Maps app, does it hallucinate? No, that’s just AI, right? Aren’t we all dependent on Maps for traveling now? Who even remembers the way anymore? Yes, at times, maps do take a weird path. This is an error, but it is not deep learning; it’s just AI.

— Aren’t we more at ease when emails categorize their contents into Spam, Promotions, or Inbox? Isn’t this work already automated? Is this AI-driven automation not beneficial? Similarly, the government may wish to classify certain official requests from citizens to expedite the process or to automate some medical classifications in the NHS. Is AI really bad? Errors can occur in manual processing, too. Times are changing; government departments may lag behind the private sector.

— There are many more examples of AI in use, and none of them require Deep Learning.

— Once again, none of the AIs mentioned above utilize Deep Learning.

— What if governance starts some AI?

— At the end of the day, your leaders can provide you with an automated system that makes tracking easy and keeps you safe.

— Give it a try; AI-driven governance depends on logical automation instead of deep learning automation. Nonetheless, can deep learning be applied in a semi-supervised manner, if you like…

— Yes in some context deep learning can be used — for example-cancer diagnosis, and likes, canecr treatments and likes.

Why AI-?

— Since may be you don’t trust leaders much, trust a system that can provide evidence and accountability.

— These systems can work effectively with leaders.

— Learn and implement processes for the long term, and be accountable to the citizens of the countries.

— Help establish a system with your leaders; one day they may not hold the same position, but these systems should always offer you protection for your needs and wellbeing.

— Accept that some systems may operate on deep learning, and therefore some errors are inevitable; hopefully, they won’t occur in essential and sensitive departments.

— Rather than complaining, support leaders and be part of the change.
