New York Mayor Mamdani said that NYC won’t have AI for school kids until 8th grade. Does this mean they won’t teach AI until 8th grade as well? Or does he mean AI-equipped schools? No one is having fully AI-equipped schools in the near future, Mamdani. So that means NYC would keep children unaware of AI. As when you teach AI, you have to give some practical knowledge. This is how Computer Science is taught. You teach coding and give practical classes. If you haven’t forgotten, AI was once a branch of Computer Science, now so big that it is a subject in itself. So, if you want your children to be aware of AI, do you want to move outside New York, as China and the UAE adds AI to the curriculum for young kids, in primary school as well as high school?
So, NYC Mayor, if you want to introduce AI, what practical skills would you give students? As I mentioned in my prior articles, children need practical training with VPNs and simulations of AI software made especially for students. Then you would teach students about AI and show them in practicals what AI is on restricted servers. Inquisutive students would ask parents what AI is then? Then parents would show them the OpenAI chatbot on their phone. So, NYC, you still have time to think of the generational change.
China and the UAE are both teaching extensive lessons to children. Do you teach children ahead of time, or are you preparing them to get jobs right after high school? With basic knowledge in primary schools, children would be taught machine learning and AI algorithms around junior high school. So, what about the students who grew up with no AI education? Would they learn AI as a diploma course to keep up with new generations of AI-aware high school graduates?
This would definitely create a gap between students who learn AI in college and those who learn the basics of AI in school. This could create a generational shift. Students who are AI-aware as schoolchildren would be completely different from those who were not exposed to AI in school.
Ready to face generational change? Oh yeah, New York would be behind all this, and don’t be scared to see Chinese teenagers’ applications for jobs at your AI companies. But New York, can you still give private tutoring to children with practical awareness? Would your state allow out-of-school exposure to AI? Just as there was a boom in the private sector a decade ago, everyone was teaching their children C++ coding in India. Now, don’t be scared, New York, if parents enroll their children in private AI courses. To China, maybe you are preparing your children for an exam whose syllabus is about to change.
