What is the AI race, and why does winning it matter?
The AI race refers to developing useful, meaningful AI for practical use. In future AI makers can inject their own story into the AI, which can affect the audience. This isn’t being practiced yet. But with China’s most recent and competitive AI models, China wants to gain an audience and users. In a way, in the future, the Chinese government could control the world by controlling AI if the world fails to produce its own AI. We have seen China’s military might, including how it took over Hong Kong. Do you think China would let its AI run on every phone around the world and not take advantage of it? It’s not just Chinese AI but China-favored, China-sponsored, or China-funded AI companies even in your region. How can the People’s Republic of China have been in rule since 1949? Are people of the People’s Republic of China happy? It’s the regime and regime supporters, not Chinese people, here! Why regular upgrades in military might by Chinese regime? Now AI and robotics in military?
Just one auto-upgrade to the AI, and the people around the world are under your control. How? No need for parliament, no need for elections; just one upgrade in the AI app, and people start getting anti-government messages and pro-China messages. China can rule the world in this way. But just one upgrade, and its allies are happy, and its foes are booed away.
Hence, it is paramount that you take care of your AI, the AI you trust, the AI that your parliament passes as safe. One AI release, and people are being sent recommendation algorithms from China or, say, some malicious AI company in your region, but banned by law in your country.
So, this is the AI race that politicians around the world are talking about. Your country’s AI apps may be safe; some are, some are not; some may be Chinese puppets. That is, some of your AI apps may be puppets in China’s hands. While other AI apps are here to provide you with honest answers about things you care about.
This is an AI race; when the true Singularity comes, we need to ensure governments monitor any upgrade. We note China’s capabilities. The People’s Republic of China has ruled China for 76 years, since 1949. The way China is making robots, these robots are running faster than any human in games meant for whom? No one knows what these games measure in a robot. We don’t want them to run in the streets here. Then why? What is China’s vision in AI, then?
Should we use AI from China then? An AI that can give us entertainment is one thing, but an AI that can, in the future, befool humans is another thing. So choose the right AI, choose a well-tested AI, choose an AI that has been used with trust. We don’t trust China in all this, so make sure to know what this AI race is. Right now, this race is between the US and China; soon, other countries will join.
But at the same time, we want to use the best models as part of a democratic process. What if governments in some countries enforce their AI on their people? This is another form of taking away people’s rights to use their chosen products just because the government wants to control its people. Can governments control their people with AI? The answer is yes, but by not allowing people to choose their preferred AI, governments can stop the public’s choice and wishes to use a product of their choice. Unless there is a threat, as in the case of Chinese apps, why should a country block an app from use? Unless the country wants authoritarian rule.
We are far from the time when AI can manipulate people’s wishes. But if we are not part of the race, we may fall behind and be forced to use an AI from China. One fine day, China would say, “We won this race; we make all the people of Earth subjects of “The People’s Republic of China”. This is the worst-case scenario. The EU should wake up now. Already facing several problems, the EU may find Ursula von der Leyen’s proposals non-optimistic. The EU needs a better leader. Other countries should join in trusted apps around the world. Let global competition reign within friendly nations. China is friends with the world, but China’s military might can give anyone goosebumps. What does China want? Have you ever thought about it? Why is China extending AI and Robotics to the military? Why is China making all this military stuff? If China is friends with the whole world, why does China need robots in defense now? Who is China’s enemy? If China is friends with the world, then why is it increasing its military strength daily? So, if they didn’t leave robotics for defense, would China leave AI if given an opportunity? There are things you can do without the military, China, and that is AI control. This is the AI race we need to catch up with!
